Passengers irked as inter-city fares double

Chiniot (Pervez Ahmad): There was huge rush of passengers who were overcharged by the transporters here as a number of people left the city for their hometowns to celebrate Eidul Fitr.
Chiniot is home of hundreds of thousands of outsiders who station here for job and businesses. As Eid holidays begin from Tuesday, they started leaving the city on Friday. Long queues of passengers before ticket booths of bus stands were seen. The transporters charged Rs50 to Rs200 more than the fixed fares. Transporters accommodated passengers also on buses tops, mainly in non AC coaches. Passengers complained the officials concerned no one was ready to hear them. The police and administration officers are not doing their duties in this regard, they said.
The passengers alleged that stand owners of Chiniot and Jhang enjoy the patronage of the district administration as the transport secretary had turned a blind eye to illegal bus stands in several areas. They also demanded that the chief minister should launch state-run public transport system in Chiniot and Jhang.
