KPK ex-MPA jailed for three years

SWABI - Former independent MPA Sardar Ali from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was sentenced to three-year imprisonment and fined Rs 5,000 by a local court here on Saturday for giving false information about his BA degree.Sardar Ali, an independent candidate, defeated Abdul Karim Khan of Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao, now named as Qaumi Watan Party, in the 2008 general elections from PK-34 Swabi-1V. Sardar Ali was also associated with PPP-S, but he contested as an independent candidate in protest after the party leadership refused to award him ticket. In the 2008 general elections only those candidates who possessed a BA/BSc degree were allowed to contest. He also furnished his BA degree along with his nomination papers, which proved fake.On January 21, the Election Commission officials got a case registered against him in tehsil Chhota Lahore police station under sections 78 (3-B), 82 and 94 of Representation of People Act 1976 and sections 199, 200 and 471 of PPC on the charge of contesting election on the basis of a fake academic credential. On 29 January, 2012, the court of Additional District Sessions Judge Swabi Jehangir Khan rejected his plea for bail before arrest.“It is the first time that a former legislator was arrested and sentenced in a fake degree case,” said a lawyer after the court verdict.Sardar Ali was arrested by the Chhota Lahore police from the courtroom after the announcement of the verdict and shifted to the judicial lockup. It is worth mentioning that in June 2010 the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to take action against all those politicians who contested the 2008 general elections while submitting forged documents and fake academic degrees. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) collected all parliamentarians’ degrees and sent them for verification to the respective universities.
