Polls after completion of assemblies term: Kaira

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said Wednesday that the general elections would be held after the assemblies complete their term.
Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira while briefing media on the cabinet meeting said that the term of the assemblies was expiring in March and elections would be held latest by May.
He further said that despite challenges inflation rate has been brought down at eight per cent from all time high twenty-five per cent that is a big achievement.
He said the Government is making concrete efforts to bring improvement in the power generation and supply system to facilitate the people and enhance economic activities.
He said despite financial constraints the government is providing thirty billion rupees subsidy to the consumers every month to ensure provision of cheap electricity.
Kaira said the PPP-led coalition government made remarkable achievement during its tenure and made successful efforts to overcome challenges being faced by the country and the resolve the problems of the common man.
To a question‚ he said the Federal Ministries and divisions ensure implementation of ninety five per cent decision of the Federal Cabinet during this period.
The Minister said the Cabinet approved financial cooperation with the United States and United Arab Emirates.
The Minister said the present Government increased salaries of the Government employees by 115 per cent and the cumulative effect of the increase was 150 per cent.
The Information Minister said despite record increase in development budget‚ the Government was able to cap its yearly expenditure at six per cent.
The revenue collection increased from one trillion to two trillion rupees and last year there was record increase of 21.5 per cent in tax collection.
However‚ he pointed out that as against this‚ performance of the provincial government in respect of tax collection was dismal. He said provinces got additional more than 800 billion rupees during the last two years under the NFC Award.
The Cabinet was told that a targeted subsidy of 130 billion rupees was provided under Benazir Income Support Programme to the poor.  The Interior Minister briefed the meeting about Malala issue.
Replying to questions‚ Kaira said elections would be held in a fair and transparent manner and apprehensions about rigging were baseless.
About implementation of the Supreme Court judgement in Asghar Khan case‚ the Minister said detailed verdict is being awaited. To another question the Information Minister said the office of the President is political as it is part of the parliament and therefore‚ he has to do politics.
The Cabinet expressed solidarity with the storm hit Americans. He said several Pakistanis have also been affected in the Sandy storm.
The Minister said the Cabinet approved financial cooperation with the United States and United Arab Emirates.
