LAHORE (APP) - Federal Minister for Food Agriculture and Livestock Nazar Muhammad Gondal has said that uplift of small farmers is must to boost agriculture sector on which economy of the country is heavily dependent.
He was addressing a meeting of Agri-Support Fund (ASF) here on Monday.
The minister said that the agriculture sector being backbone of national economy is among the top priority sectors of the government.
That is the reason the government has allocated huge funds for providing facilities to the people attached with agriculture and livestock farming, he said.
Gondal said that due to scarcity of energy resources several industrial units have stopped working and it is the time when agriculture's role has become of vital importance to save the economy.
He emphasised upon the need to make agriculture sector profitable to enable the growers to increase their output and meet food requirements of people.
The minister said that Agri Business Support Fund has been providing facilities to the processors but not paying due attention towards small farmers.
He expressed hope that ASF would divert attention towards small farmers and teach and guide them for fulfilling the procedural formalities to get financial assistance.
The minister also emphasised upon the need of launching media campaign for this purpose.
He urged the small farmers to focus on increasing agriculture production to enhance exports of the country. Khalid Ahmed Chief Executive Office ASF briefed the minister about the working of ASF.
He said that Asian Development Bank is providing financial cooperation to ASF. ASF helps in promotion of different sectors of agriculture and livestock, he added.
