OTTAWA (AFP) - The Canadian economy created 43,000 jobs in January, most of them part-time, and the unemployment rate dipped to 8.3 percent, official data showed Friday.
The Statistics Canada figures were much better than the consensus forecast of 15,000 new jobs and an increase in the unemployment rate to 8.5 percent from a revised 8.4 percent in December.
It was the fourth jobs gain in the past six months, the government agency highlighted.
Part-time employment shot up in January to a level last seen six months earlier. Full-time employment held virtually unchanged but in the past half year has trended higher, it said.
