LAHORE - The masses have to endure the excessive and hours long electricity suspension at least for another 20 days as 1,150 megawatt is likely to be added in the system not before July 25 following the complete resumption of the all units of the Mangla powerhouse.
Pakistan Electric Power Company Managing Director Tahir Basharat Cheema said that the generation of 850 to 900 megawatt from the power house is likely to resume from July 25, however, making it clear that the power generation may also start earlier. The Managing Director said the Mangla power generation house would start producing around 230 megawatt electricity from July 10 as its two units are likely to be partially operational by then.
He said that PEPCO was making full efforts to reduce power thefts and improve situation by September, so that it could fulfill the promise made with the people. He said that there was fault in eight powerhouses of the dam and speedy work was in full swing to repair it as several teams of Pepco and Wapda were working on them. Tahir said that they wanted to restore the system as soon as possible.
He said the fault in the powerhouse was due to technical defect, however inquiry committee set up to investigate the whole matter would bring facts before the nation.
He said the raise in power shortage caused by the fault in the Mangla powerhouse has been partially overcome by increasing the production capacity of the Tarbela Dam and thermal powerhouses were functioning at full speed.
Meanwhile, the unbridled monster of loadshedding continued to hit the domestic as well as commercial consumers of Pepco hard, mentally disturbing them, besides making their life miserable, as they cannot perform their daily tasks without electricity.
Despite official announcement of eight-hour scheduled load management, masses found no respite in this regard and prolonged and unannounced power breakdowns of at least 12 hours in urban areas and up to 16 hours in suburban localities continued to make the life of people hell.
It was observed that every segment of society was in trouble due to unscheduled and unannounced 12-hour loadshedding all over the country including city.
Consumers said the political government in spite of giving relief to the people had raised electricity tariff to put the public into trouble.
They said that the ongoing power crisis has paralysed the normal life of people, as several areas were facing grave water shortage.
Domestic consumers find it difficult to carry on their daily domestic work due to unscheduled power loadshedding.
According to a press release, PEPCO load management system has been consistently working to control the power deficit. On 05 July 2009, the demand of electricity went up to 15359 Megawatt. The load of 2247 MW was managed to provide maximum relief to consumers. It is to be noted that last year same day the load shedding up to 3942 MW was carried out. A total of 590 MW were exported to KESC, where as last year the export was 540 MW.
