LAHORE - Two more Mangla Powerhouse units, having a capacity of 220MW, resumed power generation, belying the Federal Water and Power Ministers statement, whereby, he had claimed that Mangla was generating power at its full capacity.
According to Pepco officials, another two units of Mangla Powerhouse with capacity of 220 MW, which broke down after developing a fault on June 29, restored on Tuesday, aggregating the electricity generation to 880 megawatt now from the power station.
The resumption of power production on one hand revealed that another 220 megawatt added to the system while on the other it also disclosed that 270 megawatt of two units more are still un-operational and are under-repair.
The power restoration also implies that Mangla powerhouse is not operational yet fully as was stated by the Minister of Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf on Monday and which was quoted by print and electronic media on Tuesday that all units of Mangla powerhouse were now operational. It is to be noted that the Minister for Water and Power had said on Monday that all units of the powerhouse were now in working condition, 'but due to low water releases as per the indent for irrigation, we are not getting full electricity from the Mangla powerhouse.
Talking to newsmen after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy Crisis, he had said that 700 megawatts of electricity could be transmitted from the Mangla powerhouse because only 15,000 cusecs of water was being released from the dam.
He said that the new overhead transmission lines from Mangla dam powerhouse had been completed, linking all its units.
The power generation would improve when water releases were increased, he added.
Sources said that electricity from six units was inducted into the system and the transmission lines of the remaining four units would be in place next month.
It is also worth mentioning that powerhouses all 10 units could not be restored despite Pepco rhetoric to restore power generation fully from Mangla before July 25.
At least two units of 270 megawatt of Mangla powerhouse are still out of operation.
Despite the claim of Pepco and Wapda authorities only eight out of total ten units could be restored till date, generating a total of 880 megawatt of electricity out of its capacity of 1,150 megawatt.
Despite the utilisation of all resources and workforce to meet the deadline of July 25, the commitment for the complete functioning of the powerhouse was not fulfilled.
Ii is worth mentioning the Mangla power station with an installed capacity of 1,100 MW had broke down due to a technical fault. Following the shutdown, PEPCO MD Tahir Basharat Cheema had said on July 5 that repair work of Mangla Power House was being carried out at fast pace and its all units would resume operation from July 25. Pepco spokesperson Mohammad Khalid did not respond when he was contacted to get his viewpoint in this regard.
