'Sleeping Beauty' who sleeps for two weeks at a time
SHE is known to her family and friends as 'Sleeping Beauty - but her life is no fairytale. Louisa Ball, 15, sleeps for two weeks at a time because she suffers from an incredibly rare disorder.
She misses school exams, dance lessons and even missed an entire weeks holiday away with the family as she slept the whole way through.
Sleeping beauty syndrome is scientifically known as Somnophilia. Both men and women suffer from this typical problem and sometimes they may sleep for a whole day or a whole week. The people who suffer from this disease have to be woken up either by means of caresses. They should never be awakened forcefully as it may create several adverse affects. The victims who suffer from this problem will wake up briefly but will not be fully alert.
When there is some kind of psychological problem in the person, the sleeping beauty syndrome is caused. It may also occur due to a viral infection, which can affect the sleep centre of the teenager.
This is a very rare disease and throughout the world the number of victims surely has not exceeded 1000. This illness has turned a girl of 15 years into a sleeping beauty. When 15-year-old Louisa Ball goes to sleep she does not disturbs anyone. She sleeps for days without any break.
The doctors simply do not know how to treat this poor child with the sleeping beauty syndrome. A possible treatment for Somnophilia is some behavioural therapy. With the help of these therapies, this syndrome can be managed at times. In some cases, the problem naturally disappears and until that life is really a hell.
This girl, according to her mother, had symptoms of flu one year ago. It was after that flu that had turned her sickness she turned into a sleeping beauty. IC/DM
