TEENAGE pop star Miley Cyrus has sung her way to the top of the North American box office chart with Hannah Montana: The Movie, early figures show.
The film version of the Disney TV show took $34m over the weekend knocking Vin Diesels Fast & Furious - with $28.8 - off the top.
Cyrus previously topped the chart with a filmed concert of her singing as both herself and alter-ego Hannah Montana. Animated adventure Monsters vs Aliens was in third with $22.6m.
Hannah Montana: The Movie is the latest instalment in the story of an ordinary teenager who leads a double life as a singing star. It follows the success of the Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, which took $31.1m on its opening weekend in February 2008.
Animated comedy Bolt, in which Cyrus voiced lead character Penny, took $26.2m on its opening weekend in November and went on to make more than $100m.
Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office analysts Media By Numbers, said: Her average opening weekend is around $30m. Thats a pretty good track record for a 16-year-old. Her opening weekend average rivals stars twice her age.
Comedy Observe and Report, starring Seth Rogen, opened at number four with $11.1m while fantasy adventure Dragonball: Evolution opened at number eight with $4.7m. BBC
