Maoists reject govt’s ceasefire offer

Published: November 03, 2009

Just few days after Home Minister P Chidambaram asked the Maoists to abjure violence, the latter have released a statement saying that laying down arms means a betrayal of the people’s interests.
The Maoist statement however also states that an agreement could be reached by both sides on a ceasefire if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram give up their irrational stand that the Maoists should abjure violence. The statement adds that if the Government is serious about talks they should create a conducive atmosphere by implementing what is in the Indian constitution.
Earlier on October 6 the Home Minister had maintained that once the Maoists put down arms, the government would agree for talks.
