BORDEAUX, France (AFP) - More than 80 per cent of French people are against Paris sending more troops to Afghanistan, according to an opinion poll carried out for a regional newspaper.
The Ifop poll for the weekly Sud Ouest Dimanche showed 82 per cent opposed to reinforcements for the some 3,300 French troops already in Afghanistan.
Ifop noted that in a similar poll 18 months ago only 55 per cent were against the despatch of some 700 extra troops to Afghanistan. The telephone poll of 968 adults was conducted as the United States announced a surge of 30,000 additional forces and its allies pledged a further 7,000.
France for its part has said it will wait until an international conference on Afghanistan planned for London on January 28.
