WASHINGTON (AFP) - Democrats on Thursday tightened their grip on the US Senate with Republican incumbent Gordon Smith, from the northwest state of Oregon, being ousted by Democratic challenger Jeff Merkley.
MSNBC and Fox News called the vote for Merkley two days after the vote because early returns showed the race too close to call.
Smith, a first-term senator, was the latest Republican to fall following Tuesday's balloting, which saw Republican-held Senate seats seized by Democrats in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico.
When the new session of Congress gets underway in January, Democrats now are set to control 57 of the Senate's 100 seats.
