SRINAGAR (AFP) - A leading Kashmiri leader who broke ranks with his movement to contest Indias general elections saw his move roundly rejected by voters on Saturday.
Sajad Lone could manage only third place in the Baramulla-Kupwara constituency. His final vote tally of 65,637 was around one-third that of the winning candidate from the pro-India National Conference. Hes dejected, one of Lones close aides told AFP.Lone had attracted a lot of media attention with his decision to contest the polls, defying the long-standing boycott policy of the APHC which sees elections as a tool to legitimise Indian rule in Muslim-majority Kashmir.
