China's quake homeless face bleak future

May 21, 2008

They were lucky enough to survive China's massive earthquake, but for the nearly five million people left homeless and destitute, the future looks bleak. Near a stadium on the fringes of the southwestern Chinese city of Mianzhu, blue tents set up by the authorities have become the new homes for more than 7,000 people from mountainous areas razed by the May 12 tremor. On the other side of the road, bulldozers are levelling ground to set up another camp, this one for soldiers taking part in relief efforts. Worker Deng Yong, 25, found his sister in the displacement camp but he was still waiting for news about his parents, grandparents and the rest of his family.
