30 rebels, three soldiers killed in fresh Sri Lanka fighting

August 24, 2008

At least 30 rebels and three soldiers were killed in fresh fighting in Sri Lanka, according to military officials. Sri Lanka is braced for intense fighting as troops close in on the Tamil Tigers' political capital, with local election results on Sunday backing the government's war strategy, analysts say. The defence ministry announced last week that government forces were just 12 kilometres (seven miles) from the key rebel-held city of Kilinochchi.
