EU plans ban on high-risk Chinese food products

September 25, 2008

The European Commission said Thursday that it planned a ban on certain Chinese food products for children following a milk contamination scandal in China. "The measures will ... impose an explicit total ban on all products originating from China for infants and young children containing any percentage of milk," a commission spokeswoman told journalists. The measure was intended "to ensure that such products are not imported in any form," she added. China does not export dairy products such milk or yoghurt to the European Union, but it does export food products containing milk in some form such as biscuits and chocolate.
