5,500 orphans after massive earthquake
May 26, 2008 BEIJING (AFP) - Nearly 5,500 children have been left without their parents following the massive China earthquake, either because their parents were killed or cannot be found, state media reported Sunday.
Xinhua news agency, citing sources at the national disaster relief headquarters, said at least 5,498 children were alone following the May 12 quake, which has killed more than 62,500 people and left nearly 24,000 missing.
