Caste clashes toll tops 37
May 27, 2008 JODHPUR (AFP) - The death toll from clashes between police and an Indian community demanding special government treatment for their caste has shot up to 37, a state minister said Monday.
The clashes erupted in the western state of Rajasthan on Friday as thousands of protesters from the local Gujjar community pelted police with stones.
"The death toll is now 37," Rajasthan home minister Gulab Chand Kataria said.
Two policemen were among the victims.
