August 28, 2008

Iran has hanged a woman and four men for murder and a fifth man for drug trafficking, reports said on Thursday. The five executions for murder were carried out on Wednesday in the capital's Evin prison, the government daily Iran reported. The woman, identified only by her first name Shabnam, was convicted of stabbing her husband to death after learning that he wanted to divorce her and marry a younger woman, the paper said. Two of the men, identified as Amin and Vahid, were found guilty of murdering taxi drivers. The convicted drug trafficker, identified as Mohammad Hassan B., was hanged in northern Semnan province, the semi-official Fars news agency reported. He had been sentenced to 25 years in prison but escaped during a transfer, was recaptured and sentenced to death.
