SKorean PM angers Japan with visit to disputed islets
July 29, 2008 South Korea's prime minister on Tuesday visited a group of disputed islands to bolster Seoul's claim over them, but Tokyo called the trip inappropriate and urged the two sides to settle the row calmly. The dispute centres on a chain of rocky islets in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea. The island are controlled by Seoul, but have been claimed for more than a century by Tokyo. The simmering row erupted again earlier this month when Japan issued new educational guidelines calling for Japanese students to have a deeper understanding of their country's claim over the islands.
