UN Security Council reaffirms nuclear demands on Iran

Source: SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT September 28, 2008

UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council voted 15-0 Saturday to adopt a resolution reaffirming demands that Iran curb its uranium enrichment activities, a clear indication that Russia and China still share that goal with the U.S. and its European allies.

The measure restates a strategy of offering Iran economic incentives to pare its nuclear program and threatening to impose sanctions for failure to cooperate. While not seeking new penalties, it ``reaffirms'' four prior United Nations resolutions and ``calls upon Iran to fully comply and without delay with its obligations.''

“The added value of the resolution we have adopted today is that it is channeling the minds of everybody in the direction of political rather than military enterprises,” Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said.
