Indian court stays hanging of Rajiv Gandhi killers
An I ndian court on Tuesday stayed the execution of three men convicted of plotting the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, news agencies reported. According to reports, Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan were to be hanged at a jail in the state of Tamil Nadu on 9 September. The date for the hangings was set after Indias president rejected mercy pleas from the men. The killing of Rajiv Gandhi by a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber shocked India. Murugan and Santhan are from Sri Lanka and Perarivalan is an Indian Tamil. They were members of Sri Lankas Tamil Tiger rebels.
