LAHO RE - A 60-year-old Christian widow has been stabbed to death, apparently in revenge, inside her residential quarter in Mughalpura area here early Thursday evening. The killer, however, has confessed having committed the crime in the name of honour, on his arrest, the police said. Rani Bibi, mother of five, was knifed thorough the heart, chest and belly while she was alone in her house, located near Daras Baray Mian in the Mughalpura Police precincts. Witnesses described that the man forced his entry into the house of Rani Bibi, the aunt of his wife, with a sharp-edge weapon in his hands. He shouted, passed insulting remarks against the old widow and stabbed her fatally. The police have arrested the killer later identified as Naveed Masih, a labourer by profession and also recovered the weapon from his possession. The local said that the old woman was living in her small apartment located near a Church along with a puppy since her all five children had married and settled somewhere else. Her apartment is situated in the middle of some 60 residential quarters, established for the Christian community in the congested locality of Mughalpura. She was preparing to cook meal for the dinner when her niece Safia entered hurriedly. He (Naveed) is coming to kill both of us. Dont tell him anything about the money and move to some safer place, Safia, wife of the killer told her aunt but she did not take it seriously, their next-door neighbours said. In the meantime, the killer forced his entry into the apartment and attacked the old woman. He also badly thrashed his wife. The widow made hue and cry and a number of local residents gathered at the scene but no one tried to overpower the furious man. Naveed Masih stabbed the widow in the chest, heart and belly while his wife Safia managed to escape from the scene. His (killers) close relative were present at the scene but he warned them of dire consequences, an eyewitness girl told this report who later called the police by phone. As the police arrived, the killer surrendered himself to them. The old widow was rushed to a nearby hospital but she succumbed to injuries in the way owing to excessive bleeding. Giving reasons for killing the aunt of his wife, the accused told the investigators that he stabbed the woman over suspicion of facilitating his wife to indulge in immoral activities as she had developed illicit relations with different men. The police have removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating. Killings of women and girls in the name of honour and suspicion of illicit relations are common. A couple of days ago, a youth gunned down his 19-year-old sister on suspicion of illicit relations with man in Raiwind area. But in Christians, it was rare incident to some extent, the police investigators said, adding, in this particular case they believe the society dominated the religion, instigating the Christian man to kill the woman in the name of honour. According to the 2009 report of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) released this year, there was a sharp surge in violence against women and 1,401 women were murdered during 2009. Out of these, 647 were murdered in the name of honour, while 757 were killed for other reasons.
