The coming disaster

USA, India, UK and Nato are bent upon taking care of Pakistan. How has this come about? It all started with Musharraf's blind submission to the American dicktat. Nine Eleven was a windfall for him personally. As one who had wilfully violated the constitution of the country and dissolved the elected assemblies and the government, he had incurred the displeasure of the international community. He practically was a pariah. He jumped at the opportunity to win recognition and support from the sole superpower of the day even if it meant severely damaging the national interests. Clinton earlier had given him a cold shoulder when he visited the subcontinent. A single telephone call pushed Pakistan into the role of an arm-twisted mercenary. Pakistan unreservedly joined the American war against Afghanistan. It provided the use of bases to American warplanes for strikes into Afghanistan along with a lot of other facilities. It didn't take long for the dictator to agree to deploy tens of thousands of Pakistani troops on the Afghanistan border areas. All along Pakistan was accused of letting the mujahideen go across the border and join the Talibans' fight against foreign occupation. Later we were told that the Al-Qaeda leadership was hiding in the tribal areas. Musharraf's men were also found grabbing Pakistanis and handing them over to US intelligence units. Many of them landed in Guantanamo Bay. The purpose was to make money and please the Americans. In spite of the deployment of Pakistan's army for eliminating the so-called Taliban (most of them Pakistani nationals), entailing hundreds of casualties of military personnel as well as the provision of a host of facilities for American and Nato operations in Afghanistan, Islamabad was repeatedly asked to "do more." The continuing refrain from Washington was that Pakistan was not doing enough to stop and eliminate the mujahideen who were supporting the resistance in the adjoining country.
As a reaction to the military operations and the killings of Pakhtuns by the American drone strikes, the so-called Taliban started retaliatory attacks on the military installations and personnel. Off and on, talks were also held between the government and the militants but such agreements were not faithfully followed. The Naek Muhammad episode comes to mind where soon after the understanding for peace and cooperation was reached the American aerial strike bumped him off. The military intervention in FATA and later in the adjoining areas not only uprooted the decades old administrative system, the ensuing disorder and turmoil encouraged the religious extremist elements to exploit the situation and start building their influence and hold over the people.
Mishandling of these developments coupled with blunders like the military attack on Lal Masjid added fuel to the fire.
