It's our war now

By Fakir S. Ayazuddin September 6, 2008

The emergence of Asif as the front running presidential candidate in a scant eight months, has positioned him as the most powerful single politician Pakistan has witnessed. He is undisputed chairman of the largest political party and soon-to-be president. With a PM that defers to his every gesture, and can be counted on to be utterly faithful.

In this position it will be easy for the sycophants to isolate him and go about spinning their webs forcing dangerous decisions with disastrous consequences. These groups are masters of the game and their intrigues have brought down many a brilliant leader.

Their favourite ploy is the phantom chase, where the dangers are highlighted as hiding in the shadows and lurking behind every pillar. The courtier plays this card time and again, pointing to the dangers while showing his loyalty. So effective are they that brothers and sons have been turned against each other - but that is part of the power game.

Asif is facing a monumental task ahead. He has achieved his present position single-handed, and none else can take the credit. So it is important that he should put together the best team possible regardless of the party. A choice of PM should be Nawaz for it would serve to bring the largest party of the Punjab into a working relationship in the centre and of course the province. It would also keep out the spoilers - the Wattoos, and the Qs, who are trying desperately to negotiate positions for themselves and or protection.
