Are we "American slaves"?
By INAYATULLAH November 14, 2008 "We are not American slaves," says our prime minister. What made him say so? Whenever there is an American missile attack on Pakistani territory, he sincerely condemns it. He religiously keeps on articulating his feelings. Finding that his protests go unheeded, he possibly has been wondering about US-Pakistan relations and how the Americans treat us. This, to some extent, explains his above-mentioned attempt at asserting the implied sovereignty of Pakistan of which he is the chief custodian. What next? Since we according to him have not been reduced to the status of a slave, may we expect that he will henceforth address the issue with dignity and fortitude. What should we be thinking of him, if we fails to rise to the occasion to safeguard the country's integrity and honour of the people of Pakistan?
If The Washington Post story says that Mr Zardari has entered into an agreement with the US administration regarding missile attacks in Pakistan is correct, how will our brave prime minister deal with the matter. Will he pick up the courage to have a straight talk with teh President and take the nation into confidence? Let us hope that he will not let the country down and will wash away effectively the impression that we are bond-servants or mercenaries. Why not call the US ambassador again and ask her why the desired action was not taken by her country after she was summoned by the foreign office and administered a warning.
