Backing the army
By S.M. Hali October 14, 2008 The Global War On Terror (GWOT) has engulfed Pakistan in its flames and is taking a heavy toll of the armed forces, security personnel, ordinary civilians and the political leadership. Exasperated to find a unified solution to combat the menace of terror attacks, the political dispensation called for an in-camera briefing for both the Houses of the Parliament and invited the leaders of the political parties, governors of the provinces and army chief to attend the briefing, which is to last for a week to ten days. In the first two sessions, the erstwhile Director General Military Operations (DGMO) gave a detailed and graphic update on the army's operations backed by air power where essential, against the miscreants; followed by a question answer session. The crux of the DGMO's presentation was that to succeed against the militancy in the Tribal Areas the army would need full political backing from the Parliament and the people of Pakistan.
