Muhammad Ayub Khuro, when he was the Defence Minister of Pakistan, before Ayub Khan's martial law, decided to visit the air headquarters at Mauripur in Karachi. He informed me that he wanted a Guard of Honour on his arrival. I was surprised at this request but provided him with a Guard of Honour, which he inspected holding the hand of a child, who was five to six years old - probably his son. Both were obviously pleased with this experience.
After this he came to my office where he was briefed on the role of the Pakistan Air Force. He did not appear to be least interested in what I was saying and kept looking at his photograph which was hanging on the wall of my office. When the briefing ended he asked me why his picture was hanging on the wall along with that of the Quaid-i-Azam and Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan.
I told him that it has been the practice followed by my predecessors that pictures of the Quaid-i-Azam, Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan and of the defence minister at the time, are hung on the wall of the commander-in-chief's office. He asked me as to where were the pictures of his predecessors. I replied that these were removed when they left their appointments.
Khuro further added that he would like these to be put back. I replied that this was the practice that had been followed and only the picture of the defence minister at the time is placed here. "What will happen to my picture when I leave?" he asked.
