A defence minister and his picture

By M. ASGHAR KHAN August 24, 2008

Muhammad Ayub Khuro, when he was the Defence Minister of Pakistan, before Ayub Khan's martial law, decided to visit the air headquarters at Mauripur in Karachi. He informed me that he wanted a Guard of Honour on his arrival. I was surprised at this request but provided him with a Guard of Honour, which he inspected holding the hand of a child, who was five to six years old - probably his son. Both were obviously pleased with this experience.

After this he came to my office where he was briefed on the role of the Pakistan Air Force. He did not appear to be least interested in what I was saying and kept looking at his photograph which was hanging on the wall of my office. When the briefing ended he asked me why his picture was hanging on the wall along with that of the Quaid-i-Azam and Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan.
