White Lies

By DIOGENES August 24, 2008

A story has it that the managing committee of the country’s most posh and exclusive club recently sat down to declare eligible 30 new members out of a 100 whose applications had matured. Well the 30 that got invited were jubilant but among the rejects were quite a few pillars of Karachi high society who probably considered membership of this premier club their very birthright. Ticked off and out was the President of a multinational bank. Consolation: Once a Sindh Club gatekeeper refused entry to a sitting PM Khwaja Nazimuddin because the latter had not the appearance of an Englishman. Khwaja Sahib had been invited by the British High Commissioner but being a modest man returned home and informed his host who intervened and rearranged his entry. It is not known whether Khwaja Sahib ever applied for membership to the club but if he had it would not have been smooth sailing. Back to the present, another person who failed to secure the required six tick marks is the son-in law of former CM Sindh, Mustafa Jatoi. Now he would feel much better if he knew the story of his father-in-law’s struggle to get in. Then of course there is the honourable judge of Sindh High Court who was judged unfit or lesser than some. Watch out, you could end up with a class action suit here.
