What should be done?
By Dr Ijaz Ahsan September 25, 2008 After the truck bomb that gutted most of the Marriott Hotel, Islamabad, killing 50 persons and injuring 230, we can surely ask the Americans, "What more can we do to help your so-called War On Terror? Over a thousand of our troops have died fighting. Thousands of our citizens have been killed by your missiles and our bombs, and thousands more injured. Suicide bombings have become a weekly affair in our major cities. International sports teams are refusing to come and play tournaments in our country citing security concerns. British Airways has stopped all flights to our country. So, what more can we do?" It should be remembered that most Afghans do not consider the war in their country as a War On Terror; rather they regard it as a war of liberation from American occupation.
In this country, we are in the middle of a war. It is both a war of aggression by the Americans, and a full-blooded civil war between the army and the militants, in the tribal areas and elsewhere. The civil war is escalated by the attacks by Americans on our soil killing our people. Our public regards the war we wage on the militants as America's war, in which our troops are seen as mercenaries.
In this connection, many questions come to mind:
" How could a truck laden with a ton of explosives enter the maximum security zone in the country on the day of the president's address to Parliament? Did the security agencies perhaps surround the Parliament with an impenetrable wall of security and leave the rest of the capital to its fate? If so, will some heads roll, or will it be business as usual?
" Is this latest carnage in retaliation for the deaths of the tribal people from America' s missiles and our own military operations, or is this the work of CIA, to destabilise us and justify an attack on our nuclear assets? Has the RAW or Mossad any role in this; to destabilise the country?
