A sinister idea to destabilise Pakistan

By Mazhar Qayyum Khan August 27, 2008

His assumption is that the Pakistanis would have no reason to complain, but should they do, the US should activate "the India card". He feels that Islamabad is supporting the Taliban and that is contributing to driving Kabul into the arms of New Delhi, which in any case is eager to welcome the opportunity. This scenario would obviously fit in with his sinister proposal. Thus the US "can send a not-so-subtle message to the government of Pakistan: cooperate with us in suppressing the Taliban, rooting out Al-Qaeda, and supporting the government of Afghanistan - or wake up in a year or two and find yourself encircled by an Indian-Afghan alliance backed by the United States."

Pakistan should not ignore these ideas as the musings of a crazy commentator. Similar ideas might as well be assailing the minds of Bush administration officials. There are suspicions that India and Afghanistan might have a tacit US endorsement of their almost certain involvement in creating turmoil in Balochistan. It would make it easier for the US to play a dirty role across the border in Iran. Pakistan's neighbours might even be in collusion with each other in making things harder for it in the tribal region. Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani's refusal to accept American trainers in the tribal belt and demand for the right kind of equipment instead reflects foresight and Tracinski's write-up proves his unstated apprehensions.
