Convergence of interests

By Fakir S. Ayazuddin September 26, 2008

It is now abundantly clear to all, that the militants in the Northern Areas have solidly identified themselves with the Al-Qaeda and Taliban, thereby isolating their movement from all the UN members who have unilaterally joined together against terrorism.

Luckily for Pakistan, we are on the same side as the US, this convergence of interests is essential to the wellbeing of both. For the common enemy has identified itself as the Taliban affiliate of the Al-Qaeda. This organisation is responsible for the large scale killing of civilians in the North, and is perceived as the greatest threat to mankind. The displaced persons from the Bajaur area alone is over 400,000 entailing a massive burden on our meagre resources. These resources are being diverted from development for these very areas, so the deprivation effect is doubled.

The Marriott blast has brought into focus the scope and capability of the militant operatives. But for a few brave security personnel who managed to stop the Truck, the death toll would have been far greater. The sacrifice of these true soldiers cannot be suitably described. It has been captured on a CCTV tape, showing the heroism in real time, knowing what was in store for them.

The unbelievable part of the last week has been the total silence of the JI, or the  JUI, or the Islamic Independents in the assemblies or the Senate, when in fact they should be on all channels, and in the streets leading processions condemning the blasts. This silence is damning evidence that the politicians are not going to publicly condemn these acts regardless of how badly our country is being affected.
