A growing sense of insecurity!

By Raoof Hasan November 28, 2008

The nation seems to be caught in the throes of a growing sense of insecurity. Strangely, this sense of insecurity does not emanate as much from the continually deteriorating law and order situation in the country, or the spate of terrorist attacks that has consumed so many lives and destroyed so many households. Instead, it springs from an utter lack of faith in the ability and the willingness of the NROed leadership entrenched in the saddle to tackle the momentous challenges that the state is confronted with.
All this disbelief is for a bundle of good reasons. Just look at the vast expanse of botched hopes that the faltering regime has evoked across the country in a mere eight months of gross misrule. The judicial crisis that resonates non-stop through every heart that beats in this land is being continually pushed under the rug. Notwithstanding the numerous verbal and written commitments that Mr Zardari failed to honour to restore the judiciary, the inherent contradictions in the government's stance to tackle the crisis resulting from the unconstitutional proclamation of a military dictator are not lost to the people. While it is prepared to accept some 'dysfunctional' judges of the superior courts on various benches subject to the condition that they agree to be administered a fresh oath of office, it is patently reluctant to deal with Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court because of his unyielding stance on the unconstitutionality of the former dictator's edict of November 3. Also, not to be overlooked is the attempt of the incumbent government to paint a false picture of its 'democratic' intent before the world by according the protocol deserving of a Chief Justice to Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry when he went to the United States to receive various honours which have been bestowed upon him in recognition of his meritorious services to the cause of an independent judiciary in Pakistan. The government is putting up this deceptive act only for the consumption of the world while, for all intents and purposes, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry remains a pariah in the governing echelons of his own country. This is happening in a land where the sitting PCOed Chief Justice has been openly accused of having used his official position to manipulate the improvement of his daughter's grade from 'C' to 'B' to facilitate her admission into a medical college. This truly reflects the parameters of justice that are desirable with the ruling conglomerate.
