In murky waters

August 1, 2008

PAKISTAN’s growing isolation on the global stage evokes much concern and saying that the leadership at home is doing all it can to allay foreign fears and misgivings about Pakistan would be wide of the mark. After the talks with his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee, at the SAARC moot in Colombo on Thursday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that the bilateral talks had helped clear the air and the stage was now set for a meeting between the PMs of both countries who would discuss today the regional situation and try to sort out the differences arising from the searing conflict along the LoC. His statement that the “dish” they were cooking would be for the betterment of the region should be welcomed, but since the proof of the pudding is in the eating, it must be taken with a pinch of salt.
