Salvaging democracy
August 4, 2008 THOSE who believe that Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari will be able to make some breakthrough in their meeting scheduled for tomorrow must be reading too much into the situation. At the same time there is also no likelihood of a break-up of their coalition since the leadership understands that such a decision will entail grave consequences for the country. Mian Nawaz is doubtless dissatisfied with the government's performance, but by reiterating his commitment to hold the coalition together he must have disappointed those trying to derail democracy by driving a wedge between the two mainstream parties.
