No breakthrough

August 6, 2008

NOTWITHSTANDING the intensive and prolonged talks spread over two days, the coalition partners have not, till the writing of this editorial, found a common ground on major issues dividing the PPP and PML-N. The reports filtering out of the meetings held on Tuesday and Wednesday tend to confuse the public rather than convey that any definite decision has been taken. However, the PML-N meeting of Monday had made one thing clear: the party would not let the alliance break despite the differences. The party leadership was however unanimous over making a forceful attempt to persuade Mr Zardari over the need to restore the judges at the earliest, preferably this month, and to impeach the President. Mr Zardari’s interview to a private TV channel aired next day indicated he too was keen to retain the alliance at all costs.
