War crimes

THE United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution that calls on both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to investigate the accusations of war crimes during last winter’s deadly attacks on Gaza. The Assembly voted 118-14, with 44 abstentions, which calls for the allegations made against both sides in the Goldstone Report on the war made by the South African jurist of that name, to be investigated by Israel and “the Palestinian side” respectively. The Goldstone Report engaged in accusing Palestinians of war crimes, but also accused the Zionist entity of committing them, and did not provide it with the usual whitewash. In the vote, the USA as well as the Zionist entity voted against, while the UK and France were among the abstainers.
The significance of the vote lies in the fact that, based on a UN document, if the Zionist entity does not take action, as the Palestinian Ambassador noted, the Security Council can be approached in the next three months, after the General Assembly has considered the Secretary-General’s report on the implementation of the resolution.
The Zionist entity will probably not have any action taken against it in the Security Council, where the USA exercises a veto, but a precedent will have been established which will force that body to look once again at those disputes where resolutions have been passed, but not implemented, the most glaring being the Kashmir dispute. Pakistan did right in voting for the General Assembly resolution, but it must also follow the matter at the Security Council too, for it must not forget that the Palestine dispute, was seen, like the Kashmir dispute, not just as an issue caused by the UK in the midst of its retreating imperialism, but as a challenge for the entire international community, in its embodiment as reflected in the United Nations. If the UN is used in any way to solve the Palestinian issue, then it must also solve the Kashmir issue, which has been before it for the same time.
