ISI-bashing again

FOREIGN Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that the USA should have more trust in Pakistan, and the ISI, than it was showing. Giving an interview to an international news agency while speaking on the eighth anniversary of the US invasion of Afghanistan, he also called for greater market access and military technology. In another interview, to a US public broadcasting channel, he defended the ISI against charges of collaboration with the militants, asking the USA to have more faith in it. This has once again raised the issue of alleged ISI collaboration with militant elements, an allegation which the USA has raised before to try and explain the failure of its occupation forces to pacify war-torn Afghanistan, even though its invasion there was eight years ago. This allegation had died down of late, but has seen a revival ever since Congress at last passed the Kerry-Lugar Bill, which provides for an enhancement of aid to Pakistan. As the allegation is raised every time there is any development in the bilateral relationship, even though there is no real evidence for it, it appears that it is of Indian origin, and reflects that country's undying hostility to Pakistan, as well as US intentions of converting it into an anti-China tool.
Therefore, Mr Qureshi's calling on the USA to show more trust in the ISI is only logical, and only reflects the reality that he himself stated, that the ISI itself, as well as the Army Chief, realized that the militants were not friends of Pakistan. This, along with the other points that Mr Qureshi made, should convince US policymakers that the reliability of Pakistani institutions should not be doubted.
It should be noted that the USA is not giving either market access or technology because of these same doubts. They cannot be dispelled so long as the USA goes on making Mr Qureshi's government do its bidding. When Pakistan acts more independently, it will see these baseless allegations disappear.
