After Musharraf

August 19, 2008

GENERAL Musharraf is gone and the ruling coalition is in a state of euphoria. But his departure will not radically improve the situation unless it takes appropriate measures for economic recovery and focuses its attention on the issues of governance and security. It can no longer blame its failures on anyone else and will have to work really hard to prove to the international community that democracy can deliver. The nation will now be looking for the revival of the rule of law and fulfillment of promises that led the two mainstream parties to a historic victory in the last general elections. It will certainly not want them to dither about their commitment to restore the deposed judges.
