Not very accurate

August 3, 2008

A survey conducted in June last by the American-based organisation, the International Republican Institute (IRI), has revealed that 83 per cent Pakistanis want reinstatement of the deposed judges while 86 per cent consider this issue as the most important. 83 per cent Pakistanis want the new government to remove President Pervez Musharraf from the office and 67 per cent would like to see nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan as President of Pakistan. The IRI survey finds the PPP to be a popular party while 64 per cent have expressed their liking for PM Gilani, which is up from 23 per cent in the last poll.

The survey is not very accurate. The people of Pakistan are concerned with the issue of economic recovery, jobs, escalating prices, security, law and order. These are the problems being faced by the country. As for the restoration of the judiciary is concerned the PPP has backed out of the deal since the Murree Declaration. As for AQ Khan being president, this is ludicrous. How is a man who sold nuclear technology fit to be president? The PPP is no longer popular while Mr. Sharif is just buying time. He should stop giving ultimatums and do something decisive. -DINA JAFFAR, Lahore Cantt., via e-mail, July 18.
