Today's special; pay more!

October 3, 2008

If you want to understand how the rich become richer, don't bother researching profits of the hedge funds. Those are boring figures. Look instead at the way prices change on the menu of a restaurant. This should effect demand but it doesn't. And nobody ever complains about it. In fact the clientele of restaurants is increasing steadily in this country.

People who don't run hedge funds may have had enough, though. It's just that rich people seemingly have no problem with paying more for every new item on the restaurant menu while the ordinary folks have a hard time swallowing these new prices. -SUMBUL HAIDER, Karachi, via e-mail, September 17.
