The judiciary circus

June 4, 2008

The entire nation is engaged in the intricacies of the constitutional debate on 'independence of judiciary' and 'reinstatement of judges' for the last 15 months or so. TV channels, newspapers, magazines, even at marriages or funerals, we see people in emotionally charged state, debating matters that are beyond their comprehension. The country's economy is in doldrums, prices are souring high, power crisis prevalent, law and order at its worst but we are busy debating this issue. I don't deny that the issue is crucial but look at the silence of the wrongdoers. They are quietly watching the 'tamasha' of monkeys.

The main players are sitting in London or New York pulling the strings. Those here are making money from the private channels with their expert comments. The TV anchors have become experts on constitution. The masses are moaning about the gruesome situation they are facing due to inflation but nobody is listening to them. A mother of three was forced by hunger to stand with her children before a running train. They were cut to pieces but the nation did not turn the eyes away from the circus of judiciary. -AMJAD HABIB MIRZA, Lahore, via e-mail, May 21.
