Incubating in bank

By now an amount of Rs 9 billion has been earmarked, excluding the current year allocation. Although the purpose of this fund was to give immediate relief to the distressed, unfortunately the entire amount was kept in the bank to earn profit on it and the needy were allowed to die of hunger during these last three years.

The original purpose of the government was not to earn profit; the idea was to lessen the hardship of those who cannot make the ends meet. But these needy and deprived people remained in dire distress while the profit was being earned on the allocated amount. May I suggest that following arrangements may immediately be made so that maximum amount should reach the deserving; (1) A list of 200 most distressed persons may be called from each union council of every district of Sindh. (2) After necessary scrutiny through mukhtiarkar of the tehsil concerned, each person may be allowed Rs1000 per month. -DR ALI AKBAR DHAKAN, Karachi, via e-mail, June 22.
