Nato not behind drone attacks
By Umar Aziz Khan December 2, 2008 Brussels - Reiterating Nato’s open distancing from the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) drone strikes into
Pakistani territory, Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said on Tuesday, “Nato’s mandate ends
at the border.”
Scheffer was speaking to a select group of Pakistani journalists at the Nato Headquarters in Brussels right
before the annual ministerial conference. He distanced his organization from the drone attacks that have
attracted much criticism in Pakistan, where the strikes have moved on from the semi-autonomous Fata to
the settled areas of the NWFP as well.
He was alluding to the presence of independent, non-Nato US troops there operating under the original
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Upon being questioned as to whether the existence of a parallel US military campaign, despite the
existence of Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), was a comment on low US
confidence in Nato, Scheffer denied there was any deficit of confidence.
