Use of renewable energy resources stressed

By AZAM KHAN July 3, 2008

ISLAMABAD - The energy situation in Pakistan is quickly moving towards an alarming situation at present. Historically, two main factors contributing to weakening the energy sector are limited supplies and inadequate infrastructure for provision of energy to the industrial sector.

“The government of Pakistan should concentrate further on exploration of its immense resources in the field of oil and gas,” said Ari Heimo, an energy expert of HEIVAL, Estonia, European Union, while talking to TheNation here on Wednesday. He said that the rapid pace of industrialization in Pakistan over the past few years was reflective of the impressive growth of manufacturing sector that resulted in increased energy consumption. “Pakistan is one of the fast growing economies of South Asia and has shown 8.4pc GDP growth rate during the fiscal year 2004-2005, while the growth rate in industrial, agriculture and services sectors stood at 12.5pc, 7.5pc and 7.9pc respectively during the same period,” he observed.
