Govt to import 1,000MW power from CARs

By USMAN CHEEMA August 4, 2008

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan will sign agreements for the import of electricity from Asian Republican States today to overcome the power shortage faced by the country at present.

Around 1,000MW electricity would be imported from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan through Afghanistan and the agreements would be signed with international financial institutions for the availability of funds for the development of infrastructure required for this.

The government would also make arrangements to further develop electricity-trading arrangements between the Central and South Asian regions after the two-day meeting of IGC to be concluded today. Federal Minster for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf inaugurated the meeting here on Sunday.

The minister said that Tajikistan had surplus electricity and import of power from the said country was the one option to induct power into national power grid. He said that IGC would be responsible for project implementation, contract administration and system operations matters.
