KARACHI - Local producers and marketing companies have increased prices of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) to Rs9,890 per tonne. After the hike, one kg LPG will be costlier by Rs9.
Now a cylinder of 11.8 kg will cost Rs105 while 45.4 kg cylinder will be sold at Rs418.
Chairman All Pakistan LPG Distributors Association and FPCCI standing committee Abdul Hadi Khan told the media persons on Friday that LPG producers had not only challenged the writ of the government but they would also effect reduction in the LPG consumption by 40 percent. He said 50 percent distributors and 30 percent marketing companies could have become dysfunctional due to alarming increase in the LPG prices.
Local producers are continuously setting the price of LPG on their own due to indifferent attitude of the government which will diminish the significance of the LPG as being a cheap alternative of petrol, he added.
He demanded the government to bring down the production cost of LPG to Rs35,000 per ton. He asked the government to discourage the monopoly of some local LPG producers so that price hike could be controlled and inflation lessened.
He called for a high-level meeting of LPG Distributors Association, FPCCI, producers, marketing companies and other concerned stakeholders to determine appropriate prices of LPG. He said if the government was not ready to look into the matter, a crisis in the LPG sector would be imminent.
