KARACHI - At last the police have registered a case against Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza on court orders over his alleged involvement in the killing of two Sindh Tarraqi Pasand Party (STPP) workers.
According to sources, the case against provincial minister has been registered at Sohrab Goth Police Station while TPO Gadap Town has also been nominated in the FIR.
Ramzan Kalmatti, brother of deceased STPP worker Barat Kalmatti, had moved the court for the registration of a case against Home Minister Sindh Dr Zulfiqar Mirza, Town Police Officer (TPO) Rao Anwar, and three SHOs of Gadap Town allegedly involved in the murder of two Sindh Tarraqi Passand Party workers.
When contacted, Ramzan Kalmatti told The Nation that Sohrab Goth Police had registered the FIR No 437/2009 under section 302/34 PPC against Dr Mirza, TPO Gadap Rao Anwar, SHO Sohrab Goth, SHO Gulshan-e-Mamar and SHO Sachal for their alleged involvement in the killing of two STPP workers at Northern Bypass on June 10.
It is pertinent to mention here that STPP had announced protest demonstration against the arrival of internally-displaces persons (IDPs) in the province but the Sindh government imposed ban on rallies and procession. But the STPP planned to stage a protest demonstration at Chief Minister House. When its workers took out a rally in Gadap Town, the police tried to halt them. As a result, a confrontation between the police and the protestors took place and two STPP activists were gunned down while a number of others sustained injures. Police, however, claimed that the STPP activists were killed and injured in the firing from their own companions and booked some 40 workers of the party.
After the incident, Home Minister Sindh Dr. Mirza constituted a committee, headed by DIG A.D Kawaja, to probe the incident but complainants were not satisfied and went to the court seeking registration of an FIR.
Meanwhile, on the recommendations of inquiry committee, a case was registered against a DSP and three SHOs of Gadap Town while departmental action was ordered against TPO for negligence.
On Wednesday, the court ordered to register FIR against Dr Mirza and TPO Gadap Town but the police were reluctant to do so on lame excuses. However, on Friday a case was finally registered against the real culprits on Friday.
Kalmatti said that accused persons are powerful enough to influence police interrogation but we have trust in our courts and will continue our fight for justice.
When contacted, DIG Zafar Abbas Bukhari did not attend the phone while police were unable to arrest any of the nominated accused till the filing of this report.
