64 bodies found in container

QUETTA - At least 64 bodies and dozens of unconscious people were recovered from a shipping container in
Hazar Ganji area of the provincial capital Saturday.
According to police sources, the container, which was found parked at the outskirts of Quetta, was carrying over
110 people, apparently illegal immigrants being transported from Afghanistan to Iran via Pakistan.
The sources said when the driver of the container opened the container door, he found the people dead and
unconscious due to suffocation.
The driver immediately escaped from the scene leaving the truck on the road, said eyewitnesses. Police and
Edhi rescue teams arrived at the scene and shifted the fainted people and bodies, most of them Afghan and
Uzbek, to Bolan Medical Complex where emergency was declared.
Sixty bodies and over 50 people were recovered from the container when it was properly opened, a police
official said and added that the deceased and unconscious victims apparently belonged to Afghanistan and
tribal areas.
Talking to TheNation after regaining consciousness, a survivor said, I belong to North Waziristan. Hospital
sources said that the death toll might rise as many of the unconscious victims were in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses say, most of the deceased apparently belonged to Afghanistan and tribal areas.
Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Aslam Raisani has taken serious notice of this incident and ordered an
inquiry. It may be mentioned that bordering areas with Iran are used by human smugglers for sending people
illegally to Iran and European countries.
Annually, a large number of people loose their lives in their bid to get to European countries illegally.
