Govt under attack over ISI
By NAVEED BUT and KHALID AZIZ August 5, 2008 ISLAMABAD - Leader of the House in the Senate, Senator Raza Rabbani, Monday told the Upper House of the Parliament that the government was following a three-pronged strategy to root out the menace of terrorism and extremism from FATA.
While participating in the debate in the House over the law and order situation of the country, Rabbani said that the PPP-led coalition was following a three-pronged plan to address the problem of extremism and terrorism in the restive areas along the Pak-Afghan border.
“The strategy includes dialogue, winning of hearts and minds of the people through economical, social and educational development programmes, and the selective use of force,” Rabbani explained.
Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Senator Kamil Ali Agha accused the coalition government for totally ignoring internal and external threats faced by the country. He also criticised the government for handling the Inter-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) in an awkward and disgraceful manner. He said that the government itself disgraced its Prime Minister during his visit to the United States by badly managing the trip.
Agha alleged that the coalition government was continuously ignoring and showing lack of interest to the sovereignty of the country. He said the people had great concerns about the defence and sovereignty of the country.
“The coalition government didn’t reply to the threats of Afghan President Hamid Karzai properly when he was talking to attack Pakistani territory. On the other hand, our arch rival India started violations to the Line of Control,” he claimed.
